Frequently Asked Questions About Neuropsychological Testing

  • 1. Q: What is neuropsychological testing?
  • A: Neuropsychological testing is the use of standardized measures of thinking skills such as attention, memory, language, and problem solving to identify the level of brain-related skills and functions.
  • Testing also includes standard written and/or interview questions about anxiety, depression, and behavior.
  • 2. Q: How will the testing benefit me?
  • A: This depends on your current health and mental health situation. Test results can help identify your cognitive strengths and weaknesses, could lead to a diagnosis, and will result in recommendations for you and those helping and working with you.
  • 3. Q: Will my insurance pay for this testing?
  • A: Insurance coverage for neuropsychological testing depends on your insurance and the reason for the testing. Our Office Manager will help you check your insurance coverage, and your responsibility for co-pays or paying your insurance deductible. If necessary, arrangements can be made on a case-by-case basis for a payment plan.
  • 4. Q: How long does the testing take?
  • A: Examinations vary in length, from one hour to several hours. This will be discussed at the time you make your appointment. You will be able to take breaks, and can snack or eat as needed. If necessary, testing will be done in two sessions.
  • 5. Q: How can I study or prepare for the testing?
  • A: These are not tests you can study for. Try to stay relaxed and get a good night's sleep.
  • 6. When can appointments be made?
A: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays are available for assessment or therapy appointments.
